Okay, H50 folks, don't fret, I'm still plugging away at this monster fic, I just needed to stop any do this for a second. So, without further ado, an open letter to Mr. Moffat.

Dear Mr. Moffat,

Man, look, the thing is, I love you, I really do. I love Sherlock, I love Doctor Who, I love the episodes I've seen of Who that you wrote before the show fell into your hands. I trust you to tie up loose ends and carry off a plot more than I trust...er...pretty much anyone else working in television right now, which says something, because you take some crazy risks. And you've clearly written at least this season and the last of Who back to front, plot-wise, and who knows how far out that goes, and that's so ambitious and so dangerous in television, so you've got my respect, you really do. You've got mad balls, Mr. Moffat, and that's awesome.

However, I do have one quick, little question: OH MY GOD, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, AND WHY, WHY DO YOU HATE ME?

Don't get me wrong! I loved the episode last night, I did, I really did. But the thing is, Mr. Moffat, I'm an absentminded person, I can't help it, I'm just One of Those People. I put things down and forget where they are. I lose my sunglasses when they're on my head. I open my mouth to say something and then forget it all the time, it's just a thing I do! And see, until last night, that wasn't a big deal, but now? Yeah, now it's a big deal. Because now, every time I forget what I was going to say--and it's pretty often that I do that--I am going to think OH MY FUCKING GOD, THE TERRIFYING ALIENS IN SUITS ARE RIGHT BEHIND ME. And, incidentally, the fact that they are wearing suits makes them soooo much creepier than they would be otherwise, and you know that, don't you, Moffat? This is all a ploy to torture the forgetful people of the world, isn't it? I mean, the Weeping Angels were bad enough, I'm afraid of gardens now, and I watched Blink for the first time last night and, okay, that last part, you are actively trying to cause nightmares.

It's good television, Mr. Moffat. I am glad to have seen it. I'm not even mad! I just need you to know that I'm onto you.

Oh, god, there was something else and I don't remember it, dhfdksfg oh my god, MOFFAT, I LOVE YOU, BUT I HATE YOU SO MUCH,
Jizz

THAT WAS MY THING. So. ANY OTHER SHOW, ANY OTHER WRITER, I would be in TEARS FURIOUS that they'd killed off the Doctor in the first ten minutes, never mind that it's way in the future hypothetically. BUT MOFFAT. I trust Moffat to make it good. I trust Moffat not to want to kill the Doctor anytime soon :P 200 years is a long time, so I'll just trust that Moffat wants us to be happy for a long long time.

Also the Silence seriously make me crap my pants. And for the record, we've seen the ship in that scene with River Song and Rory before, in season 4, in an episode that was also all about making people forget shit/think things that weren't true. SO I FEEL IT MIGHT BE A THEME THIS SEASON. Fair warning :P

So here is the thing: if this were a different show, or, indeed, a different writer, I would have been pissed as fuck about the killing the Doctor thing. But a) yes, it's Moffat, and b) IT'S DOCTOR MOTHERFUCKING WHO. Like, to a certain degree I can't even get worked up about it, because like...this show is a cash cow for the BBC. Like, a major cash cow, especially right now, because the ratings are high and the merch is doing well and it's airing and getting ratings across the world (though, of course, there's still all kinds of downloading going on--guilty--but that's pretty much standard for any show these days). And it's also, I mean, obviously, hugely iconic, etc etc, my point here is--the BBC is not going to cancel Doctor Who, the whole BEAUTY of Doctor Who, to your average cash-hungry exec, is that you can reinvent it whenever you need to, however you want to. You can cancel it and bring it back, riding on the name. So to a certain degree any plotline where he dies has a somewhat foregone conclusion? The show's not likely to write itself closed like that, so he almost can't be killed.

Of course, that could just be what they want me to think :D

oh my god you just summed up everything about DW last night.

OKAY SO. I HAVE JUST GOTTEN INTO DW AND AM SORT OF MARATHONING IT IN AN EFFORT TO CATCH UP. I wasn't able to get into the Ninth doctor with the fervor that some of my friends though I should, so I've skipped ahead to Series 3 and IT'S AWESOME BUT OH MY GOD I KNOW THERE ARE GOING TO BE HORRORS AHEAD OF ME AND A;LKDHLKADSJFALSKGHL Ten is still sort of sketchy with me because last night I absolutely fell in love with Eleven, but I like them both better than Nine, even though Nine is pretty good in his own right.

BUT OH MY GOD I WAS ALONE IN MY APARTMENT LAST NIGHT AND THERE WAS A STORM AND I WAS ALONE AND THE LIGHTS KEPT FLICKERING WITH THE THREAT OF POWER OUTAGE AND MY APARTMENT WAS SHAKING AND DID I MENTION HOW I WAS ALONE.

In short: it was amazing.

I HAVE ALSO JUST GOTTEN INTO DOCTOR WHO, RO! I watched all of 11 first, and then last night I watched Blink (Ten) and The Empty Child (Nine), because [livejournal.com profile] sorrynotsorry and I decided to watch the creepy Moffat episodes. And like...I think because I started with Eleven I probably imprinted on him a little bit? But I lovoooove Ten, and I like Nine a lot, but there is something about Christopher Eccleston--not his portrayal of the Doctor, but, like, him--that makes me a little uncomfortable? Like, I keep expecting him to turn out to be a villain all the damn time. I think he acts the role well! He himself just makes me nervous.

BASICALLY, DOCTOR WHO IS AWESOME

I HAD SO MUCH TROUBLE FALLING ASLEEP LAST NIGHT, I HAD TO LISTEN TO A H50 PODFIC TO STOP FEELING TERRIFIED EVERY TIME I TURNED MY LIGHT OFF. I thought the Weeping Angels were the most terrifying Who villains ever. Well, my dear Moff, I stand corrected. So when I first watched the episodes, I was kind of underwhelmed by the monsters because I didn't understand how they could be scary.

Then I went to the toilet, and when I closed the door behind me, I FREAKED THE FUCK OUT. Because I couldn't be sure that there was nothing out there.

I love River in the episode. If you haven't watched Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead, you definitely should, because River was amazing in those episode. And her words made so much more impact in light of what happened. Oh Moffat, the way he weaves these storylines together, across many seasons.

I can't wait for next week!! :)

Am I honestly the only person in the world now who has never been scared of Doctor Who? I mean, I'm not saying the concept isn't horrible, many of the Moff's concepts are horrible, and am in awe of the man's imagination, but to be honest I find Eleven more scary than any of those monsters. Also, I kind of imprinted on Ten, since he was my first Doctor, so I never really loved Nine the way some people do, but then, IDK. Eleventy showed up and was everything that Ten was missing that was bugging me by the end of his reign. So even though Ten was my first Doctor, Eleventy is my Doctor in a way neither Ten nor Nine ever managed.

If The Moff ever reads this it'll make me so gleeful you'll want to stab him.

But also, I agree with everything you've just said. I never want to forget anything ever again. Just like I never blink around statues (and I like in the UK, so that means I hardly ever fricking blink).

I'm so with you about the complexity of his plotting. So, would you agree that it's possibly not a coincidence that we first meet RiverSong in The Silence in the Library and the aliens in S6 are called 'The Silence'?

Because I think it all depends on when he knew that he was going to be taking over as showrunner.

Steven Moffat: scaring the shit out of New Who watchers since The Empty Child.

Because, seriously? I am so much happier with him now that he's just fuckign with our minds. This is because I have a thing, about masks*, and the gas mask thing in TEC/TDD and the clockwork men's masks in The Girl In The Fireplace seriously freaked me out.

I can almost handle not blinking and being told that shadows really do hide monsters and that on the other side of the crack in your wall is an alien and there's people all around you that you forget (he actually covers that in the Confidential) - just don't go back to the masks. The Silence are close enough with the not having mouths thing. (Fact: the only other Who writer who's managed to freak me out as much is Mark Gatiss with the faceless people in The Idiot's Lantern.)

But! I do totally understand where you're coming from.

YES YES YES
TERRIFIED
I JUST WATCHED IT AGAIN AND I WAS JUST AS SCARED EVEN THOUGH I KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though I can't help laughing at the suits, just because I always just think about the fact that they didn't want to make a complete alien, so they give it an outfit. Like the weavels and oods with their jumpsuits. What, are they just born in jumpsuits????

About him dying though, I keep thinking that River has mentioned that neither Ten or Eleven are 'her' doctor, so she has to know him in at least one more regeneration, so he can't be dead! *crosses fingers*

Date: 2011-04-25 05:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] feanna.livejournal.com
I think that for Eleven at least she only meant that he still had some growing/expericecing to do until he was as she knew/knows/remembers him. Not that he necessarily has to regenerate.

I also think that they've purposefully kept tha a bit vague. Because when River met ten, she didn't say: OH, different face (as for example Sarah Jane did) but she said: Your eyes are younger. They probably didn't know, whether 10 would meet River again, so they kept their options open. He COULD potentially have become HER doctor.
So I'm guessing if for some reason they'd decided to have 11 regenerate into 12 (Matt Smith quitting? I don't even know.), then with the way River'd phrased her statement in the last season, then it'd still have been possible to do her storyline with 12. I'm pretty sure at this point though that it'll be 11.
