Heeeeey, everybody, happy "you just lost an hour of your goddamn life" day! My apologies for the mildly drunken post I seem to have made last night; it was an accident, I assure you.

So first of all, a general cry for assistance to anyone on my flist with medical knowledge and/or personal experience with this: er. Supposing...I needed to mildly concuss a 9 year old in a story I'm working on...does anyone know how that would work? I mean, ideally she ends up released from the hospital and at home and her parents have to do that wake-her-up-at-intervals thing I hear you're supposed to do for the concussed, because the plot kind of...hinges on that happening. But can that even happen for kids, or are they always kept overnight if it's seriously enough for that? And also what *level* of a concussion would it be, aren't there grades of severity, and what symptoms accompany what grades? I've been trying to research it, and the internet--which either knows me too well for comfort or is secretly my mother--keeps coming back with things like "THIS IS HOW YOU KNOW YOU ARE CONCUSSED" and "ARE YOU FEELING FATIGUED? YOU'RE FEELING FATIGUED, AREN'T YOU, YOU LOOK TIRED. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY SEE A DOCTOR."

Which, you know, would be helpful if I'd suffered a head injury recently, but seeing as I haven't (knock on wood), I NEED YOU GUYS.

ETA: WOW, okay, you guys are fucking awesome. I've pretty much got a handle on this now--thanks especially to [livejournal.com profile] gollumgollum, who is both a nurse and a genius :D THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, OH MY GOD, I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO WITHOUT YOU.

SECONDLY, IT'S TIME FOR A PICSPAM FOR PRETTY MUCH NO REASON AT ALL.

OKAY, SO FIRST OF ALL: you guys remember LOST, right? That little show DDK was on? I remember bits and pieces of it--I kind of, er, watched the first four seasons all at once and then decided I couldn't be fucked to watch the end--but here is one thing LOST had that H50 has, unless I am MUCH mistaken, yet to demonstrate:

DANIEL DAE KIM, WITHOUT A SHIRT.

SERIOUSLY, I JUST. My brain, you guys. H50, take a lesson from LOST here, okay? You have to know we aren't watching for the plot--oh my god, you have to know that--so how 'bout you give us a little less of the totally implausible attempts to legally justifying what you have the team doing and a little more of this:

HNNNNNG. Nobody is going to miss the plot you've gotta cut, we promise.

In other news, Claire van der Boom is the most gorgeous woman alive...

...except for GParks, who breaks my brain on such a regular basis now that I'm not sure I'll ever recover.

This next one is mostly because the look on her face says, very clearly, "LOL, you guys want me to do WHAT with the Sunkist? I mean, I will, I guess, but LOL." Also because, er, I'm pretty sure Sunkist is more...orange...than that.

Oh, and because every time I look at it my brain kind of goes explodey pop, but I'm pretty sure that's just the GParks effect. It's not my fault; it's science.

OH, HEY, AND THEN THERE'S THESE GUYS, YOU REMEMBER THESE GUYS, RIGHT?

Aaaaaaand the reason I got to use the "so married" tag on this post:

I MEAN, COME ON.

dhfsdf and then these are macros I made because people shouldn't give me access to the internet, I honestly don't know why someone hasn't been dispatched to remove me from my computer, it's not good for anybody:

In conclusion, I've decided to start a new religion based around Scotty Caan wearing flannel. I'm going to call it "Hfksdfhsdkf Hnnnnnnng Scotty Caan Oh My Fucking God."

AAAH the married picture. The best part is lady to the side all "AW THEY'RE SO CUTE." BECAUSE THEY ARE SO. SO CUTE.

I'm totally all up in flannel shirted Danny's business, but only if he wears the wifebeater underneath. Otherwise it shifts over from awesome scruffy studenty hotness to mildly skeevy hairy lumberjackness. Nobody needs a skeevy lumberjack.

Hngh.

Their spouses are lucky, lucky people.

And did you see the Today show interview where it looks like O'Laughlin and Caan end up staring at each other's lips as Alex says "Yes. We're very fond of each other."?

The concussion thing, drawing from the experience of my friends and family, if it is just a knock to the head (such as something normal as tripping and falling down, or running your head into something) and there aren't signs of anything else wrong, the doctor may decide to allow the kid to go home.

That mildly concussed thing totally happened to me, when I was 7-ish? I was walking by some girl on the swings and she accidentally kicked me in the head when she swung up. So I remembered it hurting, but not that bad. My friend took one look at me afterwards and dragged me to the teacher who then called my parents. Apparently her shoe left this scrapped on the side of my head along with some colourful brusing. My parents took me to our family doctor who didn't seem overly concerned but told my parents to wake me up every couple of hours during the night just in case. I remembered being really annoyed that they kept waking me up.

So I hope that was helpful.

I feel like I should know more aout concussions given the number of times people I know have had them. (soccer is not nice to people. at all.)

but I don't really remember. i know you usually go to the doctor, and if it's really mild, they're just like, "well, make sure they don't fall asleep and die, and also they might puke, so you should make sure that they aren't sleeping on their backs and choking on it. See you in the morning if they're still babbling nonsense" <---the jist of what I remember. It was six years ago, okay? And also for a 20 year old.

also, plaid. plaid is funny to me. One of my friends has a coupl of very ugly plaid shirts, one which I refer to as the Lumber Jack shirt and the other one which just causes me to gag and forget that I know him to help defend against the ugly that is happening. I do not have anything against plaid, though, because I am wearing it right now. Flannel is awesome, just saying.

I live in the land of hockey, so here's what I know:

Doctors around here are starting to use 'brain injury' language, rather than concussion, in order to underline the danger involved. My experience of bringing a kid to the hospital who hit their head was with a toddler. I came home with a helpful "How broken is your child?" handout that included things like "Has trouble keeping their balance" and "Is sleepy during the day".

In conclusion: for concussion/brain injury information for kids, try google terms that include hockey.

I used "hockey brain injury children" as search terms and lots popped up. (Which I didn't read, because I'm lazy)

I would really like to help you on the concussion question, because when I was, like, sevenish I feel off of the very top of a slide/play set thing (I was standing on top of the tunnel thing, okay, and apparently you're not supposed to do that? It was really, really high up) and hit my head on the metal grating below. Unfortunately, I blacked out on impact, so I don't actually...remember it. Like, I remember climbing up there and then falling and then zip. I lost, like, twelve hours of memory, according to my mother, is very confused that I called her to ask about this.

So, uh. Hi. I'm not much help at all.

It makes me feel like a wet blanket that you've got this post full of hotness here, and all i feel capable of commenting on is the concussion. *facepalm*

Regardless, ER nurse here. In kids with concussions, they're gonna get a head CT to make sure they don't have a brain bleed; if that comes back clear (no bleed) and if they haven't broken anything else, they'll be sent home with nausea medication (because vomiting raises the pressure in your head, putting more pressure on your brain, so we try to avoid that) and instructions to wake them every two to four hours, depending on how serious the concussion is, and bring them back immediately if they vomit more than twice, especially on the nausea medication, if they're difficult to arouse, or if they seem to get worse. Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, headache, confusion, and repeating themselves or asking the same questions; usually there's some minor memory loss from the time of the concussion on, so they don't usually remember what happened or how they got to the hospital, although memory starts laying itself down again after a fairly short period of time--they're unlikely to miss a whole day, for instance.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm kind of a big nerd about this stuff.

From: [identity profile] altri-uccelli.livejournal.com
Random person on your flist popping in...my daughter got a concussion when she was 6 or 7 when her younger sister jumped on her (fooling around) and knocked her backwards on a concrete floor. She cried a bit, then said her head hurt, but we weren't super concerned until about an hour later she vomited. So we head off to the ER where they do a triage and based on the fact that she was acting fairly normal, we weren't fast-tracked, but eventually we see an ER doc, then a neurologist. They did basic neurological exams, looked into her eyes, and talked to her, then told us she definitely had a concussion, and they wanted us to hang out for another hour so they'd check her again. When they sent us home, it was around 3 pm, and they told us to keep her awake until her normal bedtime, and to bring her back if anything weird happened, but they did not tell us to wake her up periodically in the night. My sense is that if they were that concerned, they'd keep the kid in the hospital overnight for observation (but I'd think you could still use it as a plot point; obviously different docs are more or less conservative, and different hospitals have varying protocols, and anyway the degree of severity is on a continuum so it's difficult to be definitive about it).

Concussion info: when my 7 year tried to crazy carpet down 20 carpeted stairs and ended up in emerg they looked her over , did an x-ray to eliminate scull fracture as a possibilty and sent her home with me. Instructions included. dont let her actually sleep for the first few hours, minor vomitingis somewhat normal, look out for a runny nose(wtf?) any sudden change in consciousness or marked increase in confusion bring her back immmediately. When she was allowed to sleep we were released.
