fjldsfhdjskfhs OKAY RIGHT SO HERE IS A THING. What happened, right, is that a couple people were like, hey, that poem, about the anxiety, it would be good! As spoken word! And then [livejournal.com profile] lovelyhera ACTUALLY RECORDED IT SLAM-POETRY STYLE and oh fuck it is so good you guys and I am just bowled over, constantly amazed by how awesome everyone is all the time and how lucky I am and this and you guys and ♥!

And then. I. Er. Well, I've always wanted to try the slam poetry thing but I never have for a bunch of reasons, MOSTLY ANXIETY, and I thought I would try it. And so I did, on my phone, in a voicepost like an asshole because I don't actually understand how to use my computer or the internet really, and I totally mess up in it and [livejournal.com profile] lovelyhera's is muuuuuuch better BUT. I am posting it, right, because I was thinking about how awesome it would be if everyone gave spoken word a go, if we used the inspiration meme (which, HI, GUYS, YOU ARE INSPIRING FOR FILLING THAT UP WITH SO MUCH JOY) to find words we wanted to speak and say and bring to life.

SO. Here is a thing that I did that I am fucking nervous about, and if you guys want to be brave little toasters and try something you're nervous about, DO EET. Pick a poem, pick any poem, one of yours or someone else's or a GROCERY LIST or whatever, I AM EASY, and have a go, and I will be here, cheering you on.

NOW I AM GOING TO GO WATCH 30 ROCK AND/OR WRITE AN INSOMNIA FICLET ABOUT HOW DANNY GETS COMFORTABLE LIKE A CAT SO I DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT I DID THIS ANYMORE. Thank you guys for being awesome always ♥

A couple of times I've read poems/prose for my Youtube account so it's not totally new to me, but it's still kind of terrifying to do it.

I kind of wrote a bit (I don't know if you'd call it poetry) in the inspiration meme itself last night? And then I expanded upon it today? And then I filmed myself reading it?

The video quality is atrocious. And idk what's going on with my accent - since I'm intentionally speaking slowly and clearly you can barely hear the Jersey, but I stumble over it sometimes. But anyway.

You know what, I'm going to give it to you written because even I can't understand a few of the words:

Most poetry is incomprehensible to me. As I study the art of creative writing, as I learn to be liberal, I daily see and feel the clash between poetry and fiction, the strange animosity of that divide, and then further to watch some discover they prefer nonfiction. I've spiraled into that last category and I often feel out of my depth, being so literal in a world of invention.

Sometimes, the fiction writers make fun of the poets, because as stupid and pointless and poor as our futures are going to be, they've got even less going for them. You know, dumb prejudices that mostly boil down to jealousy. We wish we could comprehend what the poets are saying, spin words like they do. Instead we try to make people sound like people, and correct our syntax, and place commas in the right spot. And nonfiction, it's true, it's just the truth made to sound pretty. It's stuffing memory with metaphor.

I wish I could wax poetic. I wish I could comprehend anything less than direct. But it’s an enigma I can’t unravel. Even with meter and rhyme I often find that I cannot find what’s hidden between the words. My skill lies in the phrases themselves, in pairing nouns and verbs and sparse adjectives to make you see what I have seen, clear as day. I can’t see the trees for the forest.

And sometimes it makes me feel like I am not one of us.

Your points about fiction/non-fiction/poetry were really interesting. And you totally are one of us because your analysis was thoughtful and spot-on and I think a fine example of creative non-fiction ACKSHUALLY.

Also your glasses and hair are the very most cutest ever.

Back during the first Inspiration Meme, [livejournal.com profile] lizzy_someone posted this hauntingly beautiful poem about 9/11 (http://gyzym.livejournal.com/51243.html?thread=1734955#t1734955) by Michael Symmons Roberts. I went and recorded it that night, but I never really knew what to do with the recording. I guess now would be the time? My reading of Michael Symmons Roberts' "Last Words." Oh, also, I love your poem. I was out having dinner with my friends and surreptitiously checking my flist on my phone when I first read it. After I finished, the first thing I did was poke my friend next to me and tell her, "Oh my God, this is what I mean when I say I don't drive because it makes my anxiety problems go crazy. This is it exactly," and then I forced her to read it there in the diner. She didn't say much about it other than something like, "Oh man, yeah," but I could tell from her face that she got it. I know that wasn't exactly the point of the poem, but really, thank you for that.

Aw, thanks bb! This was actually a really good idea because I have a bunch of poetry that's been sitting around on my computers basically since I graduated college. I like the idea of reading these all out so I can hear them aloud whenever I want without feeling dumb.

Anyways, I figured IF YOU DID IT I COULD. I wanted to be all supportive and shit.

I so, so rarely get poetry when it's written down, but when I can hear it - then I get it, then I can hear what 's being said, and so I loved this. I loved being able to actually hear the breath and pause and emphasis and cadence and YAY ♥

*hugs you hard*

This is something that's so hard to do, even if you're not an anxious person, but you did it, and you did it so amazingly, and you didn't mess it up at all, you made the poem come alive.

I will never be able to do this. Because I cannot recite poetry and I'm terrified to try. But you are so amazing for doing it and posting it, even though you were anxious about it. You are amaze. ♥

Ooh, lovely! It's so interesting to hear multiple people reading the same thing - I mean, I paused a lot when I was reading it, for ~dramatic effect~ or what not but it felt like you took maybe one breath the whole time and it was wonderful because you really got a sense of the inexorable build of an anxiety attack - how it just keeps going and going and going and going and going until it suddenly....stops.

I might return with a French poem later?

First of all, quit interfering with my brain waves. I write poetry for the first time in YEARS and post it and the next day you're all "hey, look at all this awesome stuff and be INSPIRED" and I'm like 'okay, that was weird.' Then I start thinking about recording it and YOU COME UP WITH THIS.

So, I give up. YOU WIN. HERE IT IS:
